Diaper Situation

Ok, so we made it home. Not gonna lie, the first night was the pits! Pretty much no sleep (he slept some, but by the time I would pump, clean up, and get to sleep he was up again).

But y'all, he is so sweet! He sleeps anywhere - in his crib, swing, or in your arms (though we're not doing that much). He really only cries if he's hungry, has a dirty diaper, or cold/wants to be swaddled. So precious! Look like his daddy or what?

So back to our diaper situation. Part of our night issues (including last night, which was a little better than the first) is that we're spending a lot of time changing clothes and sheets because he's leaking through his diapers, then the cycle starts because he's all stimulated and awake! Did it twice each night so far! Here's some details you might need to know - we are using Pampers swaddlers (Huggies little snugglers aren't as tight around his legs as these). He doesn't leak during the day, but he is also eating a lot more at night and more often than during the day, guess his days and nights are confused. Joey says it's because we jinxed him by putting owls in his room!

Anyway, does anybody have any advice/tips or dealt with this before? Do I just put a changing pad under him and still have to change his clothes? Do I try to fit two diapers on him at night?

My first thought was to change to Pampers if he was in Huggies, but I see you've done that. I'm not sure what else to do. Although, we did use sheet savers kind of like these at this link at Target. http://www.target.com/p/Quilted-Yellow-Terry-Cloth-Sheet-Saver-Set-of-2/-/A-539936
They tie to the slats of the crib and are waterproof to catch leaks. I was nervous he might somehow get tangled in it (I'm a worst-case-scenerio kind of mom) but he never did. And it would save us from having to change his entire crib sheet which can be a huge pain. But I still had to change his diaper and PJs, so it would still wake him up. :( Just try to use something without a lot of buttons so it's easier/faster to change. If it's warm enough, maybe just have him sleep in a snug shirt and diaper? But it's still not a great solution, I know. We didn't have to deal with too many leaks. Hang in there and hopefully the leaks will end soon for you!

Have you tried lining his diapers with non-disposable liners? They would normally go inside cloth diapers but you could use them with Pampers and just wash and reuse. You can buy them at cottonbabies.com or Babies R Us. Also, we used the BabyWise method with Addie. By 9 weeks she was sleeping 8-8 with one late-night feeding and by 3 months she was sleeping straight through. Have you read the BabyWise book? It's wonderful! Good luck--your little guy is precious!

Changing sheets in the middle of the night can be quite the task if he is sleeping in a crib. If he is in a bassinet, the challenge isn't so great. I suggest a pad underneath the sheet and then maybe tuck tightly, so he is not to get tangled in any fashion, over top of his sheet. We never had any luck with Huggies. Tried them with all 3. Pampers were my fave. Are you using preemie diapers? Make them nice and snug. The sleep gets better with most. They say they eat more often when nursing. I know you guys are super tired, but it really does go by super fast. Allie has been sleeping through the night since she was 11 weeks. Usually goes to bed around 7ish and sleeps til 6ish. Good luck! Keep us posted. Your blog is wonderful and the pictures are precious. Not sure who he looks like, but he is darn cute!

Hey Lindsay! I had this same problem with Will and my fix was a simple solution that Stephen told me. Make sure his boy part is pointed down in the diaper. I didn't know to do this because obviously I don't have that and so it would be pointed up and so the diaper would be a little loose around his waist so it came straight out the top. That may or may not help your little man. I have always liked Pampers better than Huggies, but that's totally a preference thing. Also, it could be sleep position whether he's sleeping on his stomach or back (I know it's controversial). When I carried JB for her 2 week checkup, they did something where she had to lay on her stomach and she peed right out of her diaper on their table. Just a few things to maybe consider.

Thanks everybody! yes, we are doing babywise but from what I understand not really implementing it the first week or two. Jennifer, Joey agreed that is an awesome idea, would have never thought to point it down!!

Lindsay, Will peed out of the Huggies every time. That is why I gave them to you in hopes Marshall would fit them. Just chunk them! Also are you putting the diapers on tight enough. My ped said there is no thing as swaddling or diapering too tight. They can handle it. What size are you using? We went to size 1s pretty early on. Maybe the newborn size is just not absorbent enough at night. My friends told me when they start peeing out of a diaper try going up in size.

John leaked at night, and I ended up using Target diapers--they were the only ones that didn't leak, but I don't know if you can get them in newborn. Seriously, for us, Target brand over pampers or huggies. Not true for girls--just for guys.

As for sleep...can you sleep during the day? It doesn't make up for sleeping at night, but if he takes any naps during the day--sleep then for sure!!! Right now I would do anything possible to get some sleep because I feel like everything is easier if you can get rest some how. And if you have moments of exhaustion and you feel a little crazy--it gets better. It gets so much better. Whatever method you use--babywise or not (we did babywise with Ada, not with John), he will settle into a schedule and life will return to normal (a different kind of normal, but normal). Praying for ya'll. Those first weeks are sweet but SO HARD. Hang in there!!!!

LB, no such thing as advice overload!! Amanda, you may be right about them not being absorbant enough at night because the diapers were so full, not just leaky. We'll try going up a size tonight and making it tight and seeing how that does.

LB Target does have newborn size diapers. Those worked for us too. All diapers worked except the Huggies. Lindsay, they grow so fast you may not have this problem next week! It is crazy how fast they grow and what you worry about one week changes the next week. Try the bigger size and see if that helps. Cinch them really tight. I was afraid to put them on too tight at first but the dr. said that it is fine!
